- Helps to strengthen bones. It helps to treat indigestion. Long pepper can be used to speed up the recovery from a cough or cold and also reduces fever. It has a host of uses in Ayurvedic medicine.
- Cooking with Long Pepper: They are the key spices in many spice blends, or masalas, used for savory purposes. Long Pepper pairs well with all sorts of meats, many vegetables, stews, even spicy, fruity dessert dish. While you can infuse its flavor by using it whole in a stew or slow roasted lamb dish, it is typically ground before using, much like black pepper, to bring out its essential oils and flavors.
- . Long pepper can be used in most pepper-mills that grind black pepper. We suggest snapping the long pepper into smaller pieces first before loading them into the mill. Whole, dried long pepper spikes can be used in marinades, stews and roasts. Put them in vegetable pickles (fresh or dried). Use them in soups the same way you might use a bay leaf. You can also steep them in tea with honey.
- It can be used as an alternative to black pepper in any dish, especially if you need a flavor slightly more sweet and spicier than the typical sting of regular pepper.
- Safety Profile: Indian long pepper is a completely natural and organic herb which does not pose a threat to your body. There are no known side effects of using this spice for your health. Not enough is known about the use of Indian long pepper during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
- Storage: Store in an airtight container

Long Pepper (Piper Longum), is a flowering vine of the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. Both Chinese and Indian cultures have discovered medicinal benefits from using long pepper. Long Pepper grows 'upwards' instead of hanging down like round pepper. Many small grains cluster together in the body, which is called a 'catkin.' A fleshy, fruity component glues the grains together forming a spike that measures 3-4 cm in length. Long pepper spikes left on the vine ripen to a red color. There is a short period before this color change when they are still green yet mature enough to be eaten. This is the optimum time to harvest this, especially when eating them fresh. Fresh green pepper turns black and fresh red pepper turns dark red when dried. There is little difference in flavor between the two after they are dried. It is also known as pipalli, thippali, pipli, java/Indonesian long pepper, bi bo (Chinese), etc. and has many health benefits. It helps in fighting against bacterial infections, prevention against liver ailments, and many other useful benefits. The roots and fruits of Pippali are used for its medicinal purposes. Fruits of this plant are slight yellow to orange in color and pungent in taste. Indian long pepper is mostly derived from the wild plants, but is also grown in small area in the Khasi hills, the lower hills of West Bengal, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It occurs wild in the forests of Andhra Pradesh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands as well.
